The men's first team were made to pay dearly for wasting several golden opportunities in Tuesday night's 4-0 loss to Mangere United at Phyllis Street Reserve in Mt Albert.
The Maroons, wearing the change strip orange shirts, turned in another improved showing in an entertaining match under lights but a host of missed first half scoring chances proved costly as the Mangere side extended their unbeaten streak to 12 matches.
Mangere made a fast start and had dominated the opening 10 minutes but the Maroons did enough to stay on level terms.
After surviving that opening onslaught, the Pukekohe side came into the match and carved out several quality opportunities but Simon Andruchow's effort hit the right hand post before teenage winger Robbie Leonard fired over the bar from six yards on the end of an Andrew Lamborn cutback after the left winger had rounded the Mangere 'keeper.
Teenage midfielder Jethro Conway also fired over the bar after getting into the opposition penalty area.
As it was, Mangere took full advantage of those misses by showing the Pukekohe side how to finish as they scored three times between the 17th and 43rd minutes via Sameer Ali, Mohammed Shiruf, and Sumendra Pooni.
The second half continued as the first had gone with both sides creating chances to score with Pukekohe's best opportunity again falling to Leonard who couldn't keep a volleyed effort down.
Mangere's Sandip Singh scored the only goal of the second half in the 89th minute.
Richie Sharples played his first match of the season for the first team when he came on at left back as a second half substitute.
Pukekohe's next match, their final home game of the season, is on Saturday, also against Mangere. Kickoff 2.45pm at Pukekohe High School No.1.
