Men's firsts go down fighting

The men's first team went a long way to restoring some credibility in a 4-0 defeat to Ellerslie AFC at Phyllis Street Reserve on Tuesday night.

The Maroons picked up where they left off on Saturday after an improved showing against Mt Albert-Ponsonby and put in another solid shift against a team that had thrashed them 9-0 a little more than a week ago.

The first half on Tuesday night was an even affair as both sides created a number of chances that went unconverted with Pukekohe's energy and pressure creating regular opportunities that were not finished off.

That proved costly just two minutes after the re-start when substitute Warrick Hart opened the scoring on the back of a long ball.

The league's second leading scorer Nathan Palmer doubled their lead in the 77th minute before the final margin blew out in the last 10 minutes via two spot kicks (to Neil Cheetham and Damian Schade).

The Maroons again had solid peformances from a number of players with captain Geoff Rickard leading by example from centre back.

With their scheduled bye this weekend, the team's next outing is another Tuesday night fixture at Phyllis Street, this time against Mangere United, on August 25. Kickoff 7.30pm.
