Men's firsts fall despite better showing

The men's first team were beaten 3-0 by Mt Albert-Ponsonby AFC at Anderson Park on Saturday.

After losing 9-0 to Ellerslie the week before, the Maroons put in a much improved shift and with a touch of luck could have at least had a goal to show for their efforts.

The home side opened the scoring via a well taken low drive from Jon McGrinder in the eighth minute after a slick build-up down the left flank.

However, the visitors regrouped and both sides had chances to find the net before the halftime whistle but two Maroon efforts - from Joe Morris and Robbie Leonard - hit the woodwork and Jethro Conway's 20-yarder flew inches wide of the right upright.

Mt Albert made the visitors pay for those misses when two minutes after the re-start McGrinder doubled his side's lead and Chris Gage made it 3-0 when his direct free-kick escaped the grasp of Pukekohe 'keeper Jamie Clarke.

The home side were reduced to 10 men for the final 30 minutes when Jared Colligan was dismissed for a lunge on Andy Lamborn which resulted in the Pukekohe High School youngster limping off.

There were strong individual performances from a number of players but man of the match went to Joe Morris for creating a number of problems for the home side in the opening 45 minutes.

The Maroons' next match is against Ellerslie AFC tonight (Tueday 18 August) at Phyllis Street Reserve. Kick off 7.30pm.
