Lotto NRFL Division 1 top dogs Three Kings United took a 7-0 win over the men's first team at Keith Hay Park on Saturday.
Three Kings' striker Stu Hogg led the way with a hat-trick while Jacob and Sam Mathews also scored, as did Luiz Del Monte. Those four players all have NZFC experience. The seventh goal came via an own goal from centre-back Andy Hey.
After Hogg opened the scoring in just the second minute on the end of Del Monte's cross, the Maroons did well in making their opponents work hard to create their scoring chances.
Their second goal also came via Hogg after a neat turn and finish just inside the area while Sam Mathews added the third to provide the halftime margin between the sides.
The second half continued as the first had finished with the Maroons working hard on their defensive structure in order to limit scoring opportunities but the class, pace and movement of the Three Kings side (who accounted for Premier League side Hamilton Wanderers 4-1 in the Chatham Cup last weekend and put eight past Pukekohe's next league opponents Tauranga City) was too much to keep a lid on for extended periods.
Man-of-the-match went to Jeff Hekelaar for a spirited display as a lone striker in his last match for the club before returning to Holland. Second half substitute Ben Willmott also departs as he continues his tour of the country.
Thanks to both players for their efforts for the club in their short time with us.
Also a big thanks to the vocal travelling supporters who came through to cheer the team on in cold conditions for the spectators.
The Maroons next match is a home clash with Tauranga City United AFC at Bledisloe Park on Saturday. Kickoff 2.45pm.
