On a field that was in great conditon, although quite sloping, Pukekohe played the first half with a strong wind at their backs.
The game couldn't have started much better for Puke, when Wiz popped up at the back post to tap in from close range after only 2 mins.
Unfortunately that was the best period of Puke had for most of the rest of the game.
Puke failed to add to the score before half time, and so 1-0 it was at the break.
Playing into the wind and uphill, Puke struggled to get any dominance in the 2nd half. Some sloppy marking let Mt Albert in to equalise after 20 mins. Puke managed to go ahead again with a fairly ugly goal, which was most likely an OG, after Colin put an odd looking corner into the bottom corner of the net.
But again slack marking let Mt Albert score from a free header. 2-2.
Puke had some great chances to score the winner- Jack, Elliot and Mat B all coming close, but the best was a penalty with 15 to go. Wiz stepped up to take it (with a 100% career record) and hit it straight to the keeper. It was parried back to Wiz, who probably had claims for another penalty as he was cleaned out without the ball before he could hit another shot.
Although I thought the ref missed that crucial 2nd penalty decision, I will thank him for doing the whole game- cheers Clive!!
So 2 points went begging, but luckily other results on the day went our way and we still sit just outside the top few teams.
A win against Onehunga Sports at home on Saturday could see us jump to 4th.
Plenty of areas still to work on- marking, 1 v 1 defending, finishing, competing for the ball... oh yeah and penalty taking!
Kick Off this weekend is 12:30pm at Bledisloe Park.
