After some firm words of wisdom (most of which are unprintable) from Dolly in the changing sheds, the Over 35s took to the field against Mangere with the goal of playing football and resurrecting the form from last season.
The first half saw the Old Boys produce more chances than Mangere, with the defence looking solid and the halves providing regular ball through to the forwards. But unfortunately we were unable to slot one away.
Half time Nil all.
The second half started the same as the first but Pukekohe could sniff a victory and for the next 25 minutes, Davey Bernard hit the posts, Steve Fabs had a free kick saved (just) and Willie had his corner cleared off the line. Unfortunately during the last 20 minutes the tired legs and lack of oxygen to the brain allowed Mangere back into the game and with more ball, they started to create a few more opportunities, one of which led to the only goal of the game. Breaking down the right hand side Mangere swung the ball into the penalty area, Tony Ds attempt to clear resulted in the ball slicing of his boot, sending Andre the wrong way and bugger - Own goal.
The Old Boys fought to the end but it just wasnt happening, so the final result was 1- 0 down.
The contest was an even one with both teams willing to play good passing football and the game was also played in a good competitive spirit, so thanks also to Mangere for their contribution in this contest.
What it has shown though, is that when we play football, we can hold our own in Division 2 and the results will come.
Thanks Mike for the way you controlled the game, we hardly heard the whistle blow which resulted in a free flowing game from both sides. Also thanks to Roger and Dolly for running the line.
Good luck boys see you in 5 weeks (swine flu permitting).
