Manurewa, wet, wet, wet and never hospitable Manurewa, we just love coming up the SH1 into the heart of JBs idea of a Supercity... Yeah ...! Thats my Tui for the day.
The day after remembrance brought a performance to remember from the Red Devilz in only their second competition game of the season this newly formed team demonstrated a heartening cohesive, enthusiastic and hungry attitude in their match and some promising skill improvements came to shine through too.
One man down, with Ice on Ice on Sundays, the nine Devilz opened their match against the Manurewa Yellows, with vigour and some positive aggression.
The floodgates opened in the 2nd minute of the game and for the first fifteen minutes of the first half the Devilz poured into the Manurewa box like God poured it over the rain-deprived paddocks of Mauku and surrounds.
Kami and Kaze, like the Divine Winds they are, mounted attack after attack and in regular intervals Kaze help himself to five unanswered goals before Kami managed to slot one in too. The support play from the three backs, The Muss, Goldie and the Needle was quite outstanding, The Needle in particular showed great poise in his positional play and cover defence. Cha Boom, Da Man and Sharpy, as and when used in defence and midfield proved mostly reliable and kept adding to the pressure the Double Trouble Kami & Kaze exerted. Kaneo, in goal, had very little to do in this first half and you had to feel sorry for him having to hang between the
sticks in the driving rain.... the last ten minutes of the 1st half went a bit like the weather... nothing much to write home about and the half-time chat without oranges was not all high fives and roses...
The second half saw a slow capitulation on two fronts.... the weather decided after 24.5 minutes of the second half that it had pounded us enough and the driving rain turned into a drizzle before it turned off altogether and the Yellows decided to invite us for target practise into double digit territory. 7,8,9,10,11,12 and 13 were shared around with the DTs helping themselves to a few more and Sharpy, Da Man, Goldie and Kaneo, unleashed for the 2nd half, chipping (and smashing) one in each.
The truth be known; it should have been 20, but maybe we just saved a few for our outing against the Drury Rattlers next week, surely a much tougher assignment than todays Schuetzenfest.
Theres only 1 thing 2 say, 3 words 4 you: Devilz U rocked!
Whilst it was a good day at the office, the best thing for me happened some 30 minutes after the game; on the way home, in the car, The Muss told me he had already identified three things we could, should and need to train and improve on before our next game.
Cheers-, W
On another note;
We wish to thank Caltex and Lynda for supporting our team on match-days again this year with plenty of goodies for the player of the day Thanks Lynda and thanks Caltex-.
