Waiuku win major battle. Pukekohe win war.

Before we talk about the football itself, well done Waiuku for organising the weather, the fields, the beer, chips and hospitality to make another memorable family day to start another season.

Hopefully Tom, Steve or Dave will supply the official write up for the First team's 2 nil loss to the blues, but from what I saw the match was decided by two judgement calls and two typical strikes from the master predator himself. The "No surrender", all football attitude of the 10 man Pukekohe team will stand them in good stead for the season, but they must learn how to win too.

Well done to the Ladies First and Reserves, the Mens Reserves and Third team for helping the club to a 5 - 1 game victory to retain the Finlayson Derby Day Cup. As for the Over 35's, I'll do my best with a write up, but don't expect a Du Maurier classic. I am not worthy...

The game started out quite even with chances at either end. It took a while for our new line up to sort itself out. Only one of our back four was there from last year, Gavin starting with Mike Thomas on his right and a new streamlined Phil on the left. After about 20 minutes we broke the deadlock and went into the break 3 - 1 up, Two tap ins from me and one a shot from Robbie Leonard senior (his first touch on making his debut) which, unlucky for him hit my head before going in. Nick will claim their's but Andre would probably give more credit to Gavin for the deflection.

The second half was a display on how to attack on the break by Pukekohe, or more accurately, how not to defend by the tiring Waiuku boys. There insistance to defend on the halfway line was exposed again and again with some great timed runs from Dave, Mark and Pete. Unfortunately most our shooting would have been more of a threat to any helicopters trying to use the heliport than to the Waiuku goal.

Mark netted two in the second half and we finished 7 - 1 victors. Positive stuff for the team for their new season up in the second division. The new boys Martin, Willy, Mike and Robby all did well, and the old regulars Fabs, Russ, Dave, Gav, Andre, et al were right back in the groove. POD: Phil the Glider

Nice one, Andy.

Great win by the "Old Fellas". Well done to all our victorious teams, it's great to have the trophy locked up safely at bledisloe for another year.

Just sorry, on behalf of the 1st team, that we couldn't manage to get us the clean sweep.

Congratulations to the over 35's. I ran the line for them in the second half and was impressed with the commitment and skill from Pukekohe - all the best for a great season.

No apologies necessary from the 1st team - it was great to see how many opportunities were created with only 10 men who definitely showed the never give in attitude. Looking forward to the next game I can watch.
