Rowe, Rowe, Rowe the boat!

Pukekohe 5 Papatoetoe United Blue 1 (HT 0-1) Scorers; Jamie Pegg 2, Nick Brunger, Paul Coles, Andy Evans

Pukekohe team: Colin Pegg, Martin Bennett, Andy Bell, Neil Skerry, Richie Sharples, Matt Nugent, Colin Case, Jon Waller, Paul Coles, Jamie Pegg, Andy Evans, Nick Brunger, Nick Rowe

First up thanks to Jim Hey for refereeing in monsoon conditions, it is fair to say the pitch took a stud. To everyone’s relief the weather although possibly even wetter than last week was considerably warmer too, although the Papatoetoe teams reluctance to come out of the sheds indicated that they may not be entirely convinced of that fact.

This week saw the welcome return of Neil Skerry and Nick Rowe to the fold following their overseas trips, and the squad was close to being back to full strength with just Ari missing. The kick off saw Puke immediately on to the front foot creating a series of good chances, only to miss them in what was a carbon copy of last week’s game. You could almost hear Murray Mexted talking about the territory and possession dominance that Puke was enjoying as Papatoetoe rarely entered the Puke half. However, as most of us know dear old Murray talks a lot of crap, and usually harps on about a shift of psychic energy, in this instance the shift came as a result of us missing a boat load of chances and them bombing down the wing and slamming one into the old onion bag. The silence of the near capacity crowd told the story.

One nil down at the break and totally dominating, meant that there was little to say except don’t panic and look for the options rather than shooting all of the time. The start of the second half was much the same with nearly 15 minutes gone before the equaliser went in. Playing our new 4-2-4 formation (reserves take note) just like they did in the old days meant that there was a queue ready to take a shot. Jamie slotted the first 2, the second of which was an exceptional finish, Nick Brunger scored for the second weekend in succession to cap what was an outstanding performance, his crossing had the Papatoetoe defence in all sorts of trouble, I scored direct from a free kick with a Jon Waller special and then Andy Evans burgled a goal from Nick Rowe. In their own private duel nick looked like he was going to pull one back in the goal scoring stakes but ‘Golden Shins’ was not to be denied nipping in to claim it as his own.

A special mention for Andy Bell who also had an outstanding game, earning the joint player of the day with Nick Brunger, and Matt Nugent who had a very strong game and got a ripper of a nose bleed for his trouble.

Next week sees us away at the other Papatoetoe team in the division looking for a win to keep the pressure on Fencibles. Cheers to Laura for the support, it was awesome how she got a Mexican wave going whilst being the only one watching.

Scorers season to date: 10 Andy Evans, 8 Jamie Pegg, 4 Nick Rowe, , 3 Jon Waller, 2 Nick Brunger, 1 Colin Case, Liam MacDonald, George Miller, Neil Skerry, Ari Kloeten, Paul Coles. 3 Goals awarded for default win.

Evans breathed a huge sigh of relief - if indeed he had any breath left - with the arrival of extra forces up front! Is this the way to go or should we just keep the Reserves guessing? A good all round performance that Jonny "Keep it Simple" Waller later referred to as awesome - high praise indeed! Did the Golden Boot go to Nick Rowe for his first involvement in a month - a totally unnecessary faint which left the ball go straight to the opposition?!? Great to have you back Herr Flick!

Have to say that at 0-1 at half time I wondered what was going on as I relaxed in my mudpit between the posts? 2 shots and 1 goal were very good returns for the visitors. How we weren't 7-1 up at half time is also a mystery. Still, a change in formation and suddenly we were not only playing great football, but the goals were flying in! Andy Bell deserved his acclaim with his best performance at the heart of defence beside Neil, who as always, is an inspirational partner to whoever plays beside him. Well done lads as it was a pleasure to watch the second half performance as for me, it was one of the best this season. Oh...and thanks to the sniper who was obviously taking out the opposition players as they dramatically kept falling over and screaming in agony. Well...until Jim ignored them! As for the cry from the opposition as Paul fired his free kick in of "Ref...we weren't ready!" It did tickle me!!

You guys were a bit unfortunate to endure the monsoon conditions (although at least it was warmer than the previous week). We were a bit luckier with our 2:45 kick off and the Drury pitch wasn't in bad nick either. Well done lads, keep it up.

Keeping the Reserves guessing Scary?... We are more worried about getting a winning combination in the league with the varying team we have to put out each week. Oh 2 to have a consistent squad...
