Tales of the unexpected

Pukekohe 4 Three Kings 1 (HT 2-1) Scorers: Jon Waller, Nick Rowe, Jamie Pegg and Neil Skerry.

Pukekohe team: Colin Pegg, Martin Bennett, Neil Skerry, Andy Bond, Matt Nugent, Jon Waller, Colin Case, Nick Brunger, Nick Rowe, Jamie Pegg, Andy Evans, Richie Sharples, Paul Coles.

Byes are terrible things! Whenever we have a bye our lads enjoy it so much that they decide to continue the bye well into the following week’s game. After kicking off under sunny skies I stood watching 2 teams, one of whom had 27 points on the board and the other 8, but which was which? In truth Three Kings totally bossed the first 20 minutes with the majority of possession and territory, Murray Mexted would have loved it, especially as I think they had the edge in the psychic energy department too.

Colin was called into action to frequently mop up balls being played between our centre backs who were being exposed by a seeming flood of opposition forwards and midfielders, and some timely challenges went in from the back 4 too. All that said the little ball we had still seemed to auger well as their strength did not seem to be at the back.

After about 20 minutes a Puke attack resulted in a free kick about 20 metres out. Not for the first time this season our opposition did not stand someone on the ball and whilst they stood around debating the shocking rise in petrol prices Jon Waller thumped the thing into the back of the net. To say it was against the run of play is like saying Attila the Hun had anger management issues, still when we were playing so badly beggars and choosers and all that.

Shortly after this piece of highway robbery, Marty Bennett as only he can injured himself whilst not within 10 metres of anyone else. To be fair it looked nasty as he did an impression of one of those little red plastic fish that you used to get in Christmas crackers, such was his writhing. Changes were made and we seemed to be starting to settle. Another free kick wide on our right and just inside their half was sent into the box by Neil and Nick Rowe directed a great header into the corner to put us 2 up. I think they were a tad upset and probably justifiably so.

The game then started to get a bit of the old cup tie fever going swinging end to end with no side really getting the upper hand. Then the unthinkable happened, with less than a minute to half time Puke conceded what was a well taken goal. It was the first goal conceded since the 10th May and nearly 6 hours of football.

The half time team talk was quite forthright and revolved around passing around smelling salts to wake everyone up. A little re-arranging of personnel, back to our tried and tested and normal service was resumed. Jamie was put through for a one on one with their keeper which he duly dispatched and then delivered a great free kick to the back stick for Neil to slot home following a very well timed run.

Throw into the mix Colin having to leave the field with a lump on his knee that was more cricket ball than golf ball, Neil going in goal and the most unlikely centre back pairing ever of Jon Waller and Andy Evans, and you can begin to understand that this truly was a Roald Dahl special. However, crisis had been averted and the 100% record maintained, but only just.

Player of the day was Jon Waller who worked tirelessly and got the boys going with the free kick although a defibrillator might have been more appropriate. Also, worth a mention was Matt Nugent who man marked their number 7 out of the game in the second half brilliantly, in fact I think I saw him get into the blokes car after the game, you can let him go now Matt.

Scorers season to date: 8 Andy Evans, 4 Nick Rowe, Jamie Pegg, 3 Jon Waller, Colin Case, Liam MacDonald, George Miller, Neil Skerry. 3 Goals awarded for default win.

A work of literary elegance Paul. Well played lads for digging ourselves out of a hole. Bon voyage Mr Rowe - by the time you get back Evans could be out of sight in the real golden boot stakes!

Another good write up Paul! At half time 3 kings must half been gutted as I think we committed Highway Robbery to be 2-1 up!!! Still, a win is a win and we are going strong! Manurewa at home this weekend and lets try to get the 15 goals we should have scored at their place!!

Well done lads, it was another grinding result, league placings say we are doing ok!! Next time don't leave 2 of our key players on the bench. "Keep it simple", can be applied to coaches and team selection, as well!!
Nick have a good trip and no fancy flicks on the plane, save em for the second half of the season.
