Thirds win ugly

Pukekohe 2 Clendon 1 (HT 1-0) Scorers Jamie Pegg 2

Pukekohe team: Colin Pegg, Richie Sharples, Neil Skerry, Andy Bell, Martin Bennett, Matt Nugent, Jon Waller, Paul Coles, Colin Case, Andy Evans, Nick Rowe, Subs Emil Bojam, Chris Britnall, Jamie Pegg.

They say it is a good team that can win whilst not playing well, and I suppose that is why we are top of the table! Clendon arrived at Bledisloe Park having only lost once this season to the unbeaten Fencibles, and in the early exchanges showed why. They have a good blend of old heads combined with some speedy youngsters. In truth they started much the better of the 2 teams which may have had something to do with no training this week, as we seemed a yard slower to everything in the first 15 minutes. Gradually Puke clawed their way into the game and started to put some nice passing movements together which saw a number of chances created. The most noteworthy of which saw a great Andy Evans run and cut back, put narrowly over the bar by Nick Rowe, a great move that on another day would have seen us go one up.

After 26 minutes a Clendon attack saw the ball drop just outside the 6 yard box, Colin bravely attempted to dive on the ball as both the Clendon striker and I went for it. Colin took a substantial blow to the back of the head and had to leave the field, being replaced by Chris Britnall. If anything this further shook the Puke team into action to ensure that they gave due protection to the new keeper.

Puke continued to play some good football and duly opened the scoring when good work down the right again involving Andy Evans saw the ball flash across the goal with Jamie Pegg coming in at the back stick to smash the ball home. This saw the end of the scoring for the first half and Puke take a deserved lead into the break having only played 30 minutes of football.

The second half saw Colin return to the fray and Puke start how they finished the first spell, with some great passing movement and completely nullifying any Clendon threat, with Neil and Andy Bell looking a strong pairing at the back. The second goal came after about 10 minutes of the 2nd half when Neil controlled the ball on his chest and majestically strode Maldini like into the Clendon half before unleashing a pinpoint 30 metre pass to Jamie which was all the more impressive given he was aiming for Nick. Jamie then went on a superb solo run beating 3 defenders before lashing (Andy Evans favourite word) the ball into the left hand side of the goal. Two nil and in total control.

Cue massive self destruct! In order to protect the guilty let me just say the mother of all mix ups in our defence saw what appeared to be a completely harmless situation, result in Clendon being gifted a lifeline. I can’t bear to describe it in full detail, suffice to say it was a mare. From then on the whole situation went from bad to worse. From being in control we could hardly put 2 passes together, and constantly gave the ball away. Colin made one absolutely great save pushing a goal bound effort round the post, before being taken out whilst defending another cross. It looked pretty bad with an elbow catching him in the temple. He unfortunately was unable to continue with Steve Fabrello replacing him to become our third keeper of the day, cheers Steve. Despite being continually pushed back we hung on for the win, in a game that we should have won at a canter.

Just a quick note of thanks to Mike Botting for refereeing yesterday, it is greatly appreciated and you did a top job.

Our player of the day was Andy Bell who had a great game alongside Neil at the back, well done Andy.

Next week sees us travel to Papakura for a 2.45 kick off.

Glad to see that the Reserves haven't cornered the market in getting ugly wins. Well done, fellas.

By the way, give Andy "Golden-Shins" Evans his lucky socks back!!
