The game prior to ours featured a young Bay Olympic side containing quite possibly the biggest goalkeeper we have ever seen. And what he did, set the pattern for our game. He scored direct from a goal kick......cue wild celebrations....it was the kind of moment you play football for.
Fast forward......Puke O35's wearing shirts that flapped in the breeze, shorts that didn't stop the circulation in your thighs and socks that Alan Ball could use as a sleeping bag......(BLISS!) kicked off into the wind against one of the tallest teams I can recall playing against.
The first ten was evenly matched....Wayne broke though on goal and fired over, they hit the bar from a corner and should have scored from the resulting melee. They would regret missing that chance, as we took the lead 15 minutes in.
Fabs launched a hand grenade throw in onto my soft head, which then sailed high and handsome over their keeper and into the net. That settled things nicely as we then began to take control and doubled our lead ten minutes later.
Dave Benard picked up the ball in the middle of the park and headed off towards goal......his effort hit the inside of the post, rolled back into the path of the Ten Ton Tynesider who made no mistake from 6 yards (inches actually).
2-0 up and the chances kept coming....Wayne fired over again whilst Andy Davey was also unlucky. Half time...............satisfied faces all round.
We now had the wind at our backs and we hoped it would serve us well.....it certainly did!
Glen awarded a free kick 25 yards out and Steve Fabrello hit the hardest free kick I have ever seen into the bottom left hand corner......a truly fantastic effort. Andy Davey then kept up his phenomenal run of goals with a crisply taken fourth goal, which was followed soon afterwards by Russell Whiter, who fired neatly across the keeper.
George then had a goal ruled out for offside, Fabs hit the post with a carbon copy of his previous free kick.....( I overheard one of the opposition say "What happened?") Andy Hargreaves had a fantastic header tipped over and Wayne fired straight at the keeper.
Bay Olympic pulled one back, when the ball held up in the wind and caught out the otherwise superb defence (take a bow Gavin, JK, Liam and Dolly)
The piece de resistance arrived 5 minutes from time when I completed my hat trick.
Reminiscent of Josimar (Brazil v Northern Ireland 1986 WC), I screamed a loose ball into the top left hand corner from fully 35 yards past the startled Bay Olympic goalie (who bore an uncanny resemblence to a young Richard Stilgoe)
It was without doubt, the most satisfying goal I have ever scored and I'll tell you why.
To score a goal like that at my age, with my fitness and have two opposition players come up and shake my hand straight after I scored.......that's what we all play football for.
Those moments of pure magic................man it was great!
We were absolutely superb today running out 6-1 winners.
