The Men’s Reserve team went down 3 – 0 away at Ellerslie on Saturday, in their final pre-season game before the real business starts next week.
Facing a team who will be playing 3 Divisions higher than them, the Reserves certainly weren’t disgraced and came out of the game with a huge amount of credit.
Trailing by two goals at the break, both goals resulting from controversial refereeing decisions, the Maroons then went 3 down after a defensive mix-up early in the second half. Although they were behind, Pukekohe refused to let their heads drop and kept trying to play good passing football on the break which caused their fitter, more experienced opponents problems and were unlucky not to grab at least one consolation goal in the second half.
There were some excellent individual performances on the day and, in terms of attitude and ability, the Reserve team already looks as if it has the makings of being a very competitive outfit this season.
The Reserves start their Division 3 season next Saturday with an away game against Central United at Eastdale Park. Kick-off is at 1.00.
