The ladies 3rd team took on Three Kings at Bledisloe Park this afternoon looking for their first win of the season.
In conditions that were "blowy" to say the least, they defended the Playground End facing the stiff hurricane and the might of the opposition. It was clear from the start, that quality football was going to be at a premium, with the ball swirling all over the place and nobody from either side able to control the game to any degree.
The key stand outs in a fitful first half, were the ever solid Margurerite Cooke at the back, the marauding Lisa Holmes down the right, Shorty, solid as ever at left back (fabulous intervention Shorty!.....don't know how Happy could blow for a free kick on that one?) and an impressive first start from Sharon McGinity.
It was with some relief that we came in at half time all square given the sheer strength of the wind, which really did make it difficult to make inroads into the Three Kings half. Highlight of the half was Debbie Pascoe's revolving elbow to prevent her opponent getting through
However, we now had the wind and feeling much more positive, Puke ripped into the game with more purpose. Ellana and Sally had the centre of midfield sewn up and Anna and Alex were beginning to pressurise the Three Kings defence, which almost paid dividends, with Anna feeding the ball through to the unmarked Lisa Holmes who crashed her shot off the bar. That gave the home side the confidence to keep up the attack, with Man of the Match Lisa running at the defence at every opportunity and Ellana going close (even closer if she had a right foot!).
The game petered out into a second consecutive goal-less draw which now gives us three points from four starts.
That elusive first win ain't too far away!
