The Senior Mens O'35's took on Fencibles today, in a fixture that looked testy on paper and it proved to be the case on the grass of Riverhills Park. In a first half that was "abysmal" to say the least, the side trooped in at half time, with the score at 0-0, though in all honesty could have been 3-0 to Fencibles. This was purely down to the home sides inability to hit the back of the net from seemingly unmissable positions. The player of the day at this point was the corner flag, for standing it's ground.
With their long winning streak under threat, the side started the second half more sprightly and were immediately rewarded, when Dave Benard, in a move similar to Gary Lineker's in the 83rd minute of the England v Cameroon World Cup Qtr Final match of 1990, contrived to earn Puke a penalty. Like the great Sir Gary, he picked himself up and promptly smacked it home. From there on, Puke took control of the game and had the chances to make it safe, without success. The side was ultimately indebited to a well timed challenge late in the game by Graham Spink to prevent Fencibles from equalizing.
Richie Sharples lead the charge in the 2nd half, with a fine attacking display on the left wing, coupled with a cameo at left back when he was required to nullify the threat of the Fencibles No 6, who was a constant threat throughout.
The side take on Beachlands next Saturday at Bledisloe seeking their 24th straight win.
