Coming off a 10:0 away victory you could forgive the Lions for some pre-match confidence display. An air of authority and glee radiated from this team and with a full squad to pick from, you didn’t envy the coaching staff for having to pick the run-on team.
The Lions started the game with aggression and determination, the mid-field work-rate was outstanding and from the on-set the Buckland’s Beach Cobras were put under pressure. Keely, Megan and Grace all made their mark early on, Locke (sorry coach, that’s how I spell it), was a constant menace in attack and in the defence Sofia covered the space well.
The early pressure paid dividends; within three minutes the Lions took the lead, incredibly, all girls on the field for the Lions at the time had a ‘foot’ in the move which lead to the first goal for the Lions.
The early morning humidity was wearing on both teams, whilst the intensity never dropped; players were subbed like it was going out of fashion the next day…. It speaks for the homogeneity in the Lions’ squad that the quality of play never suffered.
The continuous pressure paid off and Megan, at the end of a fine move starting deep out of the Lions’s half, made it 2:0, fully deserved at the time.
The Lions displayed good early season form, combinations through the midfield worked well, quick ball was time and again sent through to the attack and if it hadn’t been for Lady Luck’s Saturday morning sleep-in….. the score could have been four-five: Nil at half-time. As it were; the Cobra’s fancied their chances after clawing a goal back before the break and came out in the second half all guns blazing.
The second half was providing great entertainment for all spectators, the game was never one-sided although the Lions dominated possession and looked the more cohesive team throughout.
Megan, goal scorer in the first half, now kept goal and proved that girls can do anything! Whatever the Cobras could bring, Megan had the answer; the defence played confidently, Evan, Jack, Scott, Matthew, David and Connor all contributed well across the park.
Two more goals in the second half to the Lions brought the score to 4:1, yet the story of the Lions’ dominance was not reflected in the result.
The Lions took a Lion-share of possession and turned it into goals, smart football, well played on a misty-muggy Saturday morning.
Let’s hope the Lions will attract more fans during of the season, what we have seen so far makes you look forward for more.
WELL ROARED LIONS!
