Father’s day will be fondly remembered for one final outing of the Red Hot Tunas in 2006, pitched in an action packed game against their loyal supporters. Highlights included: ‘The lucky bounce of the ball’, ‘Numbers in defence’, ‘The fighting spirit of netball’s secret weapon’, ‘The Phantom tackle’, ‘The Stealthy Tunas’, ‘The BBQ that took your breath away’, ‘The Beast and the Ham’ and ‘The Iron Maiden who took the ball’. The Red Hot Tunas finished their official 2006 campaign with an away game at the Papatoetoe Dragons’ den. After last week’s helter-skelter game the Tunas were in good spirits when they arrived at the Papatoetoe Park only to find their match had been scheduled on a pitch which resembled a prison yard (or so they tell me) more than a junior soccer ground. Surrounded by graffiti stained corrugated iron fencing with the Hunters Plaza mall front looming at the northern end the atmosphere matched the damp and over cast weather conditions.

An outstanding last game by a depleated 8th Grade Silver Sharks team completed their season with a resounding 4-0 victory. Depending on other results, this could have been enough to
win the league championship for the plucky young team. This is an incredible achievement as the team has had a terrible run of injuries and absences which led to them defaulting two games in mid season.

Aaaargh; is there anything more thrillingly inviting than the prospect of an inter club derby? The Red Hot Tunas and the Sea Snakes squared off in yet another Pukekohe AFC club derby in the 8th grade 1st division and 40+ supporters (and on-lookers) of either side didn’t think so before, during and certainly after the game.

The 9th Grade Tigers took all three points with a 4-0 win over Waiuku Leopards, thus moving into the top half of the table. Fixtures for Youth and Junior teams were once again severly affected by the weather last weekend. Most grounds in Auckland and Manukau were closed after heavy rain.
