Mens 4th Team v Uni-Mt Wellington

This was always going to be a hard game for us, up against a Uni-Mt Wellington team that had beaten local rivals Waiuku by an 8-0 scoreline the previous week.  So our task was simple ... to play with the same spirit and commitment that was shown last week and to see if we could convert our efforts into a result.

Uni-Mt Wellington signalled their intent right from the off.  The Puke goal soon came under almost relentless attack, but a commanding display by goalkeeper Blair Mason kept them at bay.  Eventually we did end up a goal down, but continued to battle and held that scoreline with probably less than 10 minutes of the half remaining.  Unfortunately another three goals conceded in those remaining 10 minutes really set the tone for what was to come in the second half.  Half-time, 4-0 to Uni-Mt Wellington.

The second half saw a flurry of attacks from Uni-Mt and more goals conceded.  Although we did have a few opportunities of our own, unfortunately we were not able to make the most of them.  When the final whistle was eventually blown the full-time score was 12-0 to Uni-Mt Wellington.

A very disappointing result yes, but we were up against quality opposition this week.  After match talk suggests that the majority of players in that Unit-Mt team were those that defeated our own Div 3 Reserves by a scoreline of 8-2 last season.  Given that, all we can do is put this one behind us and attempt to better ourselves in the forthcoming fixtures.

Player of the day this week was undoubtedly our goalkeeper, Blair Mason, without who the scoreline would have been even more unflattering.  Thanks to Tom Cramer for officiating the game and also to Jim Hey and Steve Fabrello for running the lines, much appreciated fellas.

Here’s looking forward to next week and hopefully a better opportunity to rack up our first points of the season ...
