Reserves v Thirds in the Cup Battle.

Spectators wouldn’t believe it, but the pre-match talk in the reserves changing room was about letting the Thirds come at us, and not taking the game to them. Well, the first ten minutes blew that out of the window, with the Reserves putting in some ‘heavy’ challenges to let the Thirds know that they were in for a match.
There had been plenty of banter before the match, in fact it had been carrying on for weeks with it being postponed twice. Both sides knew they were up for a hard, close game.
The first 40 minutes saw reasonably even possession, but both sides struggled to string more than 5 clean passes together in what was going to prove to be not the cleanest of matches. The Thirds probably had better territory, and numerous corners, but even some Neil Skerry free headers failed to make use of that advantage. Reserves Goal keeper Trent making a number of strong punches and saves in his 6yd box.
The game changing moment fell just before half time. The Reserves pushed hard toward the Thirds goal for a few minutes, resulting in a corner, which was floated to the back post by Jimmy. Marcus Bathan collected the ball and took it to the goal line before squaring a waist high ball across the box. Striker Scott Kerr nailed the right foot volley to perfection and sent it through the crowded box into the net. 1-0 to the Reserves at half time.
The second half was more even in territory and with possession also shared again, only a couple of chances were really created in the last 45. A hard game in the mud the day before started to take its toll on Third team players, and they suffered a couple of injuries late in the match.
The Reserves managed to hold onto their 1 nil advantage, with a great clearing header from Geoff Dodd saving what would have been the equaliser from a Jamie Pegg lob after the bouncing ball held up in time for him to beat Trent with a nicely timed chip.
At times there was definitely ‘no love lost’ between the two sides, but at the end of the day there was too many mates playing against mates for it to become anything nasty.
As Reserves co-coach, I give a huge wrap to our whole team, especially the defence which kept two clean sheets in two days, something we haven’t done, often… actually, probably ever!
Bring on the next stage of the cup, maybe it’ll be the O35’s!!
Good luck to the Thirds for the rest of their competition, hopefully you guys can hold off the challenge from Fencibles and take the title.

hey Wiz, are you sure you were there, if so you weren't paying attention. Which match is this about because it completely different to the one I played in. Sure you're not getting mixed up with Saturdays and youre lucky 2 - 0 win. I think on corners it was about 16 to 3, what does that tell you about the decent side in the game!!!!

Nice write up Wizz. Sounds like a great game. Didn't Confusious say "A square has more corners than a round but that doesn't make it a better shape for a football". Sure I saw it in the opening ceremony for the Olympics. Anyway, I think everybody from Puke going to the AFF site to see the draw for the next round has crashed the website. Tsch!

Johnny, Johnny, Johnny... Your counting must be a bit off. I remember taking 4 corners myself in the 2nd half... so 3?? Odd. I did mention you failed to take advantage of your many corners, did you fail to take in that part of the article??

First of all. Well done to the Reserves for winning the game! The result was 1-0 and you guys go through to the next round. End of story and I wish you well. As the 3rd's keeper I did have plently of time to watch the game as I recall being seriously troubled only twice throughout it. One save and one picking the ball out of the net from what I have to say was a great volley! Other than that I think we (The 3rds) did pretty well, played some nice football and should have buried the reserves well before half time. The actual count was 12 corners to two at half time boys, although I admit that in the second half the reserves had about another 4. As has been to our detrement in some games this season, we just could not put the ball in the back of the net, but thats football. Great saves from Trent, the clearance off the line from Jeff and our lack of finishing did for us. Yes it was a physical game and I have to say that it was a shame to see some nasty challenges from some players considering we are supposed to be all under the umbrella of Pukekohe AFC. But I put that down to frustration at being put under pressure from the team from Div 6B! It was just a shame that as a result of some injuries sustained to Andy and Neil that it may have damaged our chances of winning our division! Lets hope they recover for next weeks title match? And yes before anyone says it. Football is a physical game but there is physical and open foul play! Still, if the ref lets it go, then its part of the match! As I said, the game is done, the reseves won and I hope they do well. I have been told that it was the best they have seen the reserves play for a long time, so hopefully it will be a springboard for them? As for the 3rds? We hope to go on and win our division for the second year running. As the social team that we are, we just want to enjoy our football, bring through the youngsters and spread a little happiness! We happily leave the 'hard' football to the 1st and Reserve teams!

C'mon guys... let it go. Tony wrote a fair article, giving credit to each side. Both teams played some rather reckless football at times, seemingly without concern for the potential to injure themselves or others. Laying blame and counting corners will not change the result so lets just move on and enjoy what is left of our season.

Nice one Cat. Always takes a women to talk sense!. And Andy to talk a load to dribble !!!

Yeah, good luck boys - only joking (did you think it was physical - can't remember that bit!!) At the end of the day its the team with the most goals who wins and I think Andy Davey's definition of confusion is the worst I've ever heard.

nice back and forth banter lads , i was'nt at the game but you all talk a good game of footy which is a bit of a pity really because the o35s play a good game of footy and would play both of you lots off the park , sunday arvo zimmer frames and all , cmon the round bellies , all the way to ptoe for the final i say , p.s. still 2000klms away he he he

Lads, as a player who, for the last 2 years has been up and down from the 1sts to the reserves and having not played much 'competetive' footy in the UK, its sad to see anamosity between two teams that are after all part of the same club, i was at the match and i thought both teams had their fair share of 'interesting challenges', yes the thirds had some decent possesion and definately pressured the reserves, but the reserves had some good ball play (as did both teams) and the end result was a 1-0 win, the 1sts could moan about how close or how dirty some teams we have played against , but the end result still remains the same (the recent Ellerslie game for example). Time to harden up and soldier on fellas, good look to both teams for the rest of the season, and if Puke-Puke meet again, there should be as much positive buzz as a derby day. Eddie

Geez Wiz the after match banter is almost as full on as the on field stuff! It was good to see that everyone could sit down and have a drink together afterwards all mates again. Not much point writing my own report so I’ll just add to your epic. I’d firstly like to congratulate you and Peter for the win and thank everyone who came down and cheered on both teams, what a great turnout. The game was always going to be a hard fought battle and regardless of anything else I think the fact that we have so many players now in the club that have so much passion for the game and are willing to battle to the very end bodes well for the future of our ever growing club. I big thank you to all of the 3rd team for the great effort as always, to Matt Hull and Graeme Spinks who both put in excellent work, Blair for his medical assistance and Jim, Glenn and Mike as the officials on the day. Good luck for the rest of the season guys see you all back at the bar on Thursday.

Hey guys... some comments from a spectator who is not a player but did bring the family down to watch. I don't know about it being sparkling football but it was competitive and willing and the whole atmosphere was entertaining. It must be a positive for the club that below the first team there are a group of players hardened to play the tough games. From my sideline perspective the highlights were: Colin - stunning full stretch save! Trent - dominated the box all day. Mr Bennet -non-stop talking and support of his team. Geoff - brilliant goal saving header after some great work from Jamie. All players -100% passion and effort. sideline comments - always entertaining!!! Best of luck to both teams for the rest of the season and best wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured. On a slighty different point- Saturday ,Reserves vs Otahuhu- Many thanks guys - as the father of a young player from the under 17's who was given a second half run and his first taste of senior football I appreciated your support for him. In particular Clive you were great talking to him and encouraging him on and off the field. When I asked him about the most memorable parts he talked about the conversations in the shed pre and post match! ( We won't be telling his mum about that!!) Thanks again - there is definitely one more young player looking forward to senior football next year.

First of all congratulations to the reserves and the over 35's for the hard-earned victories, i know the lads from the 3rds would of made it tough for you. Second of all, dont have a go at Wiz for the report. He put his hand up to write it, and from someone that unfortunately missed the game it sounds like a good account of what happened on sunday. At the end of the day lads, your all part of the same club, grow a second layer of skin and move on. You should all be happy that pukekohe are still represented in the cup and hope they do well, be it over 35's or the reserves. I personally hope to see the reserves go all the way with the cup and im very confident that the 3rd team can win thier league, all the best for the rest of the season lads.

Having been involved with the 3rds and reserves, it was an interesting game. Good to see a Pukekohe side advancing in the cup and to see some passion in a Maroon (and yellow!) shirt. Well done to all

Dribble! I didn't know I could dribble. You'll be telling me I've got cultured left foot next! Tsch! ;o) Anyway, I reckon whoever the third team come up against this week are going to get a damn good thrashing. Bottle the disappointment lads and let it loose on the next unfortunate souls that cross your path on the footy field. All the way to the championship. Well done reserves. Good luck against Mangere.

Taken me the 2 days off work recovering with ice, physio trips & assorted other remedies to get through all the comments on this one. Definitely it was physically a step up for our boys, who don't come up against the intensity of many of the challenges from week to week. Usually we can make our territorial & possession dominance count, but we never really convinced ourselves we were going to score in the first half & had few clean chances. We battled bravely & never took a backward step but no one could ever say we deserved to win .. so, "fair play" to the Reserves - your win was the right result. Cheers to Matt & Geoff for checking on my state of fitness & sharing the chips & a beer - missed your craic with the 3rds this year. I'll be cheering on the boys at Fencibles on Saturday..... from the sideline unfortunately. Not bitter!......(honest)
