This week’s fixture saw us at home to Metro AFC, a team as much in need of a win as ourselves ...
The first half saw us start brightly enough, but as with previous recent games, unable to really test the opposition goalkeeper. The Pukekohe players worked hard throughout the half, but in all honesty the ball seemed to spend as much time off the pitch as it did on it. The most notable incidents of the first half were an opposition goal being disallowed (quite rightly) for offside and a nasty collision between Geoff and Petru – luckily both were able to continue, though I suspect that Petru was still seeing stars for a good 10 minutes afterwards!
The second half was pretty much a carbon copy of the first, with neither team really threatening to score. Mark Ellis and an opposition player both had to leave the field after a nasty collision of heads early on in the half. A bit more composure on the ball and some simple passing may have allowed us to take the points from this game, but a headed goal from a freekick conceded just minutes before full-time somehow saw us manage to (quote Paul) “snatch defeat from a game that had nil-nil draw written all over it”. A very disappointing end result for us, but again there are still many positives to work on.
Eight games without registering a single point might seem a little depressing, but at the end of the day we still have another eighteen games in which to get some and claw our way up from the foot of the table. Many of the teams that we have played so far would readily admit, I’m sure, that they haven’t had easy wins and in most cases I’m sure that we can turn the tables on them in the reverse fixtures.
Player of the day honours went to young Nick Brunger, who had an impressive debut in midfield for the Maroons. A worthy mention also to Blair, who volunteered to don the goalkeeper’s gloves and can consider himself unlucky not to come out of the game with a clean sheet.
Thanks to the referee (Mike Botting), linesmen (John Keen, Martin Bennett and Glenn Connolly) and supporters. All we can do is keep plugging away like we have been, so bring on Waiuku for the derby game next week ...
