Red Devilz are no Phoenixes

The Waiuku Tigers, friends and foes of the Devilz for many years now, came to visit and their tails were up. In a pre-season game the Tigers mauled the Devilz 7:1 and on Saturday they came with similar intentions.

The Devilz, still buzzing from their wonderful experience of a one hour work shop with incumbent All White and new Wellington Phoenix recruit Ben Sigmund the previous afternoon, were determined to avoid a similar humiliation in front of their numerous fans.

Across the park the Tigers had a height and weight advantage but what the Devilz lack in size they make up for with heart and spirit. The game was played out at high speed and both teams worked the ball around the park well. Combinations at times betrayed the still early stages of the season, this was only the second divisional match of the Devilz in 2008 yet some of the passing game displayed already showed great promise of things to come.

The Devilz’s fate in this game was soon identified:

“You shall miss, miss and miss again

Never mind how good the chances in front of the goals would be.

For the coach the first half of the game again demonstrated the fact that there’s a fine line between genius and insanity, by halftime he felt he had already erased this line.

As it so often happens; a game which was evenly played out ended up with a loop-sided score-line. The Devilz continuously missed their opportunities, the defence got in on the act and missed to clear the ball in crucial situations and the Tigers pounced… three times to be precise, when the game finished the score was 0:3, the Tigers were ecstatic and the Devilz were left wondering…

This was the one that got away and if there are any positives to be taken form this game then it’s the fact that we were in this game for the whole time and we identified a couple of little things we will do differently in future games, which we believe will make a huge difference to our game altogether.

All we are looking for now is to ‘clean our boots’, get the goal radar going again and a team willing to play us in a friendly game next weekend. All interested parties are welcome, ring 021 353 803 for details.

On another note;
We wish to thank Caltex and Lynda for supporting our team again this year with plenty of goodies for the player of the day –Thanks Caltex-.
