The first game of 2011 in Division 6 saw the Men's Thirds, with their squad of 15 from pre-season down to a poultry 12, travel to Papatoetoe Utd. The first thing worth mentioning was the outstanding facilities, the change rooms were fantastic and we were provided with our own entry card to use for the duration. Quality organisation.
The game started slowly, with neither team really having any great possession. Pukekohe had a couple of chances in the first 30 mins, but some quality keeping stopped our efforts from hitting the net. Finally George Miller opened our season's account with a simple finish after some good passing found him 1 on 1 with the keeper.
1-0 at half time and the Maroons really should have been much further ahead. We decided ball on the deck was the order of the 2nd half, but no-one listened...
From the kick off, Papatoetoe kicked the ball directly to Clive, who found time and space to curl a cross onto the head of Wiz who nodded in his first for the year within the opening 30 seconds of the half. From there, Wiz added a dodgy 3rd, Karlos appeared at the back post around the 60th minute to finish his first for 2011 and the teams 4th. Wiz rounded off his hatrick with another header, this time a free head from a corner which may have taken a slight deflection (or two) on the way in.
Papatoetoe managed to get on the score sheet with an own goal courtesy of JR. (Sorry mate had to mention it). So, a 5-1 win first up.
Round 2 had us short again with Eastern Suburbs visiting us at Bledisloe, and we played on the rough No. 2 field, but it didn't stop the football.
The start was great in football terms, but our lack of finishing (Wiz the main culprit- the first match hatrick curse was in full effect) and we didin't get on to the score sheet until Bondy was brought down in the box and a penalty was awarded. Bondy calmly slotted it himself and pruduced the 'Nolan' chicken wings in celebration. Blimmin Geordie Toon supporter.. Our 2nd goal was what really should be given as an OG, but Ben Johnston backing up from his previous 90mins deserved all the credit.
The second half saw Pukekohe play much better football and add another 3 goals to the score, even though it probably should have been 10! Jay Pressnell scored a great finish from a corner whipped in by George, Karlos popped up for his 2nd of 2011 with a smashing right foot volley into the top of the net, and Wiz finally managed to sneak one past the keeper with about 5 mins to go from a neat through ball from Clive.
5-0 final score. Thanks to Ben for filling in, and Peter Neate for playing his first game (ever?).
Goal scorers to date- Wiz (4), Karl (2), George, Jay, Bondy, Ben (1).
Special mention to George Miller: the team started a 'Knob of the Day' trophy at the first match, which George was awarded for being our Karl Pilkiington and a moaning little sod... and then he forgot to bring the trophy along to the next game... Well done George.
Next Game: 16th April @ Bledisloe. 1:00pm v Western Springs Young Ones.
