Old boys 2 debut with win….

The old boys’ second string managed to put out 12 players for their debut (just, big thanks to Anthony, Jon and Wayne carrying knocks but still soldiering on). Despite fielding a number of players who had never played together before and a debutant in goal (Jon what would we have done without you), the old boys 2 carried themselves well against organised opposition.

The opening goal came from some strong play down the right hand side by Marty M who was fouled driving into the box. The resultant penalty was a calmly slotted into the bottom left hand corner of the net by Graham.

Back came Uni-Mt and they soon equalised following an uncleared cross that was tapped in from 2 yards. 1.1 at half time but the old boys had the better of the half. Reshaping in the second half saw Wrighty moving into centre mid, Liam dropping to centre back (he appeared glad of that move!) and the ball being pushed out wide for both Marty’s and Wayne. This paid off as a fine piece of build up play from the back and through midfield released Marty P on the right flank. Driving towards goal he hit a fine right footed 25 yard effort into the top left hand corner of the net. Uni-Mt were not out of it and pushed us back for a scrappy equaliser.

On 70 minutes we were awarded a direct free kick just right centre 20 yards in front of goal. Up stepped Wrighty who stroked the ball up over the wall (rolling back the years with that one Dave!) and into the top right hand corner of the net. What a peach and 3.2 up. Some resolute goalkeeping from Jon along with defiant defending from Ants, TD, Liam, Phil, Willy and myself held out late Uni-Mt pressure for a deserved win. Some great performances (Graham, Liam, Wayne, Marty M, TD), however man of the match awarded to Marty P.

Thank you to all involved, to Uni Mt for match played in good spirit and my apologies if I have left out anyone from the write up. A valiant effort and great start to the season. Next Game Saturday 17th April 1pm ko away Bay Olympic.
